The team at Ford Media Lab was honored to have the opportunity to participate in Chilled 100 ELEVATE 2022 in Louisville, KY, the first annual educational bartender conference sponsored by Chilled Magazine. Headlining presenters, Rachel and Kyle Ford taught two educational sessions for aspiring cocktail photographers: Cocktail Photography 101 and Styling for Storytelling.
As the photographer and art director duo behind Ford Media Lab, the Fords got their start mastering the art of taking great cocktail photos in dark bars. Though their tools have changed, the same principles that prove successful in their NYC studio today can be applied to the camera in your pocket.
Cocktail Photography 101
This session covers the basics of composition, lighting and photography – specific to taking better cocktail photos in bars and restaurants. Whether you’re a bartender seeking to up your social media game, a proprietor looking to drive more traffic to your venue, or just have an interest in learning the basics of photography, you’ll leave this session armed with the skills you need to take better cocktail photos.
Styling for Storytelling
When it comes to taking a great cocktail photo, photographic skill is only half of the equation; the best photos tell a story through styling and composition. The perfect complement to Cocktail Photography 101, Styling for Storytelling focuses on the simple and straightforward formula for staging an attractive set – whether on your kitchen counter or in a bar or restaurant. The photographer and art director duo behind Ford Media Lab, Kyle and Rachel Ford, will lead you through a hands-on session focusing on the basics of planning a storyboard, creating an identity with props and styling for the rule of thirds. This session is ideal for anyone who wants to take their cocktail photos from good to great.
