How to remove an incorrect audio tag on Instagram

Have you ever posted a Reel with original audio, only to find it attributed to someone else? Where it should say “original audio” next to your username, it instead says… something else. This can be frustrating, especially if you've used royalty-free music. Luckily, there's a simple way to fix this issue and reclaim your original audio status.

Why Does This Happen?

Instagram's algorithm sometimes misidentifies audio tracks, particularly when multiple users upload similar or identical content. This can lead to incorrect attributions, which can negatively impact your Reel's visibility. When more than one user adds a similar music file, Instagram creates a page for the audio and adds an attribution, or tag, to your Reel – both next to your username and as an icon in the lower right corner.

How to Remove the Incorrect Audio Attribution

Locate Your Reel:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile and navigate to the Reels tab, not your grid.

  2. Find the Reel with the incorrect audio attribution.

Check the Audio Attribution:

  1. Tap on the Reel to open it.

  2. Look at the audio attribution in the bottom right corner. If it shows your profile icon, the audio is correctly attributed to you. If it shows a different profile icon, the audio has been incorrectly attributed.

Remove the Incorrect Attribution:

  1. Tap the three dots on the right.

  2. Select "Manage."

  3. Choose "Remove from audio page."

Refresh Your Instagram App:

Close the app completely and reopen it. You should now see “original audio” next to your user name.

Tips for Avoiding Incorrect Audio Attribution

  • Use Unique Audio: Whenever possible, create your own original audio content.

  • Check Audio Attribution Regularly: Monitor your Reels to ensure correct attribution.

  • Report Incorrect Attributions: If you encounter persistent issues, consider reporting them to Instagram.

By following these steps, you can reclaim your original audio attribution and ensure your Reels get the credit they deserve.
